Village Policies

(This may be not quite the right forum for this discussion, but Help seemed a bit off too. At least I think it's the right audience.)

I've been thinking and discussing with a few other people the various different policies that can be used in a settlement to balance players individual needs and desires to improve themselves and/or have fun, and the need to help their community and contribute. When I was looking for a settlement, one of the things I asked the community leaders who responded was about what their policies were in this regard, but the only coherent guideline I found was effectively communist--Everything belongs to the community and we'll worry about individuals later. That might even make sense during a community's formative period, but once all the basic necessities are met.... Anyway, I thought it would be interesting to hear what other groups and people thought about the subject.

What is the right or a reasonable balance between contributing to the community and having the freedom to do and explore the things you want to explore in the game. What guidelines or community policies does everyone use? How do you manage the sharing of resources, and how well is it working for you? On the flip side, if you are part of a community or were thinking about joining one, what would you want to see in a community's policies?

We have a public area and personal claims. Tools, food, forageables etc. is stored on your own claim and belongs to you.

On personal claims people can build what they want ... as long as their claim is flat, fenced and the required amount of braziers placed.

On public areas anyone can use the facilities .. if they contribute to building more, donate to claims or build defences is totally up to the person... people that don't contribute are not actually costing us anything.

So far we haven't had any leaches ...

What if one of your villagers goes bonkers and decides to open gates for raiders?

Thats one of the reasons we don't have a shared storage area ... people can only open the gates to their own storage.

Leaving response as a Link to the original quote/website due to the fact that it has a socially accepted racial term in it that these forums have classified as "racist". If mods say its ok I"ll host the image and upload it directly for easier viewing.

I highly suggest the OP adopts the Tribe approach to base development. Community property for all. "ownership" leads only to destruction.

Community policies for Salem settlements is not really off-topic. In fact, it's a topic largely without meaning outside the context of Salem. But... ok. Thanks for moving the thread?

I'm not really espousing any methodology, I'm just curious what systems various settlements use and how it is working out for them. Community property for all is certainly the simplest, but don't some people feel abused by others logging in, using stuff stored around the settlement w/o contributing anything and then logging back out? Or people using up resources collected by others as part of a larger project? Do you have individual members use small locked chests for project materials? Or are these problems you just haven't encountered?

How do you organize people building stuff? Placement and layout, etc. Do you have any trouble with people monopolizing key structures during prime times? for instance smelters, etc? Or do you just have so many smelters it isn't a problem? Also does that mean that you have each member of your village have their own 3 deep walls?

We have not encountered the problems you speak of. Perhaps it is because the Tribe screens all potential Braves to ensure that the pitfalls you describe do not join.

Think of it this way. The Tribe chooses our Braves and brothers just as we choose our wives and mates. Does it not seem odd to choose a wife and then to immediately chain her to the bed of your teepee to ensure she does not cheat? Would the argument not be to simply select a better spouse to begin with instead of making such safeguards against a poorly chosen one? The Great Spirit was kind enough to bless us with new boats to Boston each day. Select the ones with promise and discard the rest.
