I imagine it would make the Cash shop gamebreaking.

What would be cool is if large towns instead of raiding and murdering anyone in range instead merged other towns into nations, taxing them for protection either by demanding silver or a levy of fighters (feudalism). It would make the game much more interesting, but I guess we dont have that caliber or clans or amount of people in the game at the moment.

Seeing as how easy it is to actually break in and steal stuff, this is not needed.

Dis+Ainran vs. WF+allies in w6 h&h had a slight hint of feudalism by the end, with various allied towns contributing fighters to their battles (or at least thats how I saw it). Same will happen here in the end once the game is balanced right, but there needs to be more mechanics that encourage cooperation between different towns (in both games), in my opinion.

Not a bad idea. Would make things more interesting for raiders and defenders alike.

In theory, I'm not against automated defenses like guards, but it would make people who bought them that much harder to raid, and making the game kinda p2w. It seems like only raiders/big villages would have them, or enough to make a difference, and hermits would still be that much further from any type of revenge by having to deal with 24/7 guards if they ever track scents and try to summon.

Take that raid on my place last night, I have the cash in hand to hire 30+ guards for a week under your model, no amount of people attacking would have made a difference when you're being chased by dozens of npcs and taking brazier fire while trying to bash. You'd need most of the fighters on the server to raid a place like that. It'd make legit raids like theirs near impossible, which isn't any sort of balance.

Well you are going to the extreme.

Of course, limits, max guards, XX guards per XXXft2 of land etc etc, so many measures could be made to make sure it cannot be abused.

Also great, cash in hand for 30+ guards for 1 week. Ok raiders come back when they expire ?

Again, prices, balance, stats etc about guards can be anything, what i said was a mere off the top of my head example.

There are always ways to ensure its not all a "pay to win" by using silver. Maybe a small silver payment is needed, but then upkeep is required in the form of crafted foods, water, drinks, were higher stated guards require better foods, and you would have to build something like a barracks house for your guards, were you store the food etc they use for upkeep.

In this structure then, guards are determined by how many resources you have. Larger villages with larger land to protect should be able to pool more meat resources etc to hire more guards.

Stall-like system, you buy npc-guard with stats 100 for 1000s, rent per week is 250s, 150 stats 2000s rent 500s/week etc etc.
Guards can be bought only by town mayor and they are bind to town bell, so you can't get more than 3 per town bell with auth less than 1000,
5 guards for town bells with 1000-2000 auth etc etc.

Real issue for me is how and where would guards spawn and fight?

Should be guard dogs instead, I kinda like how you can instantly recognize human-controlled creatures because they're the only ones that look human.

Maybe you would need to build a "guard house" were when a crime is commited in the area, the guards spawn from the guard houses to fight, just like when a brazier is activated it starts to shoot, when a guard house is activated (Crime in range) Guards start to spawn.

Guard house with a range of 15x15 ? so 1 house needed 30 tiles or something.

If guards are KO'd they are removed from the land, and go on a XX respawn timer also, because im sure the AI of such things would be lousy coded and people will find ways to abuse it and kill them easy im sure.
