Rotating camera and compass

Postby Wournos » Fri Dec 14, 2012 11:12 am

I have been playing for three days (today included) and I've found two things that make my gaming a bit difficult.

1. It would be really great if there is away, other than mouse wheel, to rotate the camera. Like for instance using the arrow keys. If this is already available, please fill me in. My hand isn't too keen on using the mouse wheel.

2. The mini map doesn't rotate when you turn around making it really difficult to know in which direction you are going. It would be really nice with some sort of indicator (compass) showing which direction I am facing.

Also, one little thing that would boost exploration is if our leantos (is that the right word) were marked on the mini map, or if there was an option to turn the marker on or off for those who don't want to see it. Right now I'm afraid of going too far in fear of getting lost and ending up being chased by killers.

I've been using the Ender client but the only thing I really like about it are the mini map markers (although the ground leveling tool will come in handy in the future).

Edit: typo

1. No, there isn't currently. It's been requested, and, I imagine, on the list of usability features in the client.

2. The mini-map NOT turning is the only way to know which direction you're going (in cardinal directions). If you're not sure of which way your character is pointing, take a few steps and see which way the map moves. Various forms of compasses and pointers have been requested, but as with #1, it's on the "request list".

I'm not really sure what to suggest for you at this point, and the points you raise are pretty common. I just let go of my need to be in a fixed location and started wandering. At some point, you're going to come to a nice location and decide to settle there instead or you're going to get bored with that direction. Simply consume everything you've collected that you can, dump the rest, and port back home. I've usually found much better locations for a settlement this way. The random teleport is just a good way to get out away from the city where the baby killers tend to congregate.

Thanks for the reply. I'll try to find this request list to have a look.

One of my character has a leanto in the middle of nowhere and I haven't seen another person there so far. I think I'll manage. :D

The lighter tip of grass actually points north too. This might apply for other textures as well, having a noticable alignment.
