I too have a neighbor that has a field off claim and it hasn't decayed in months either.

I recently viewed a settlement of mine that I abandoned a little over a week ago. I laughed at the fact that the only thing which had totally decayed was my farm house. Even the drying racks were all still standing and in tip top shape. Most of the small objects were doing just fine, the noticeable decay was all on big objects (things that cover several tiles).

Everything needs to be on a claim, either a personal claim or a village claim, to prevent decaying. That's how it works, so there is nothing else you need to know really.

Each segment is only one tile, and since decay hits the tiles, fences and walls take awhile to decay. Things like smelters that occupy multiple tiles decay much faster, since they have a MUCH higher chance of taking hits.

If this is true.. then I should find sections to repair right? Like some of the areas should be already damaged?

If a segment has taken a hit, it'll start turning red (more decay = darker the shade), so you'd have to watch for them to repair if they're off a claim or on a dead one.

The main towns don't let anything decay (Boston, Roanoke, Jamestown), so things like chests will stay forever until they get stolen or a dev nukes it.

I do think fields get hit by decay. I had a few off claim, and just after harvest time they suddenly vanished. This happened twice in a row. I do not think it was due to a passing pilgrim due to their layout and complications to actually get to other than through my claim, next to nobody is ever seen in my neighborhood, and only some of the fields vanished.

My hunch on the matter is that they do not decay while growing, but they are subject to getting hit when ready to harvest. Both times the fields suffered no consequences while growing, but come harvest time there were a few that were gone.. and a few still intact. It makes little sense that a passing person happened to time this to within an hour two separate times, and then only selectively harvested and destroyed fields (only crop growing was grain) all while countless hours of in game time on my claim have elapsed and I have only seen a passer-by one time.
