I will only add to what Milonti said.
watcher2554 wrote:GOOGLE ADDs is controled by them...it is code that is intentionally added to the pages to direct traffic to Salem.

ITS INTENTIONAL!!!

ITS DONE ON POURPOSE!!!

IT FORSES me to scroll past these adds before I can even get to any contnent...if related to salem...that may be realted to my problem..that I searched on the WIKI in the first place!!!

And what the hell did I just tell you? Sabinati added google search ON PURPOSE to make searching faster, because built-in wiki search was too slow. If he uses google search then he has NO control over ads. But if the google search lets wiki run faster then fine. Most people will be thankful for not having to wait 10 seconds for results.

So be thankful someone actually put the effort to make wiki in the first place, then to fill it with data, then to work on its usability.

Don't spam up the threads with multiple posts. Also, this has started to stray off topic. What a player does with his websites has nothing to do with Seatribe or Paradox Interactive. If you have issues that can't be politely discussed, take it up in PMs.

edit: I don't even get a chance to post this and you go and violate another forum rule. Take a day off and go re-read and contemplate those rules. In the future, be sure to also make sure you take discussion of forum moderation to the appropriate thread.

It's not a perfect solution, but then again paying massive bucks for server, self programming a search, and having a much larger crew of volunteers is the only perfect solution. Overall it makes the wiki more functional, takes off server load so pages load faster, and it's only a bit of a hassle.

One thought: That search option thing that defaults to Advanced pushes the information down the screen a fair bit. It also seems... redundant somehow? I can't see how it actually helps your average wiki goer. Is there something that can be done with that to help streamline searching?
It's been neat to see the evolution of a game. Salem has come so far, and still has far to go. Although frustrating, I think it's been an experience worth the effort.

haha, oh wow.

sev, i'm not sure what you mean. you mean that big dumb wiki search box with all the options? i guess I could move it somewhere? also, does the average wiki user find the google search to be helpful in finding your desired results? I put it on to have better search, it doesn't help the speed any, i did other things for to improve the speed.

that big dumb wiki search box with all the options?

Yes. And frankly I can't even make heads nor tails of it. I don't see it helping the layman find what he wants.

As for search quality? I'm not sure. Definitely more results for a non-exact search, but a lot of the top results aren't terribly useful. Here's a simple example: I searched the word house

-Farmer's House - Salem Wiki

-Template:Infobox/List RequiredBys - Salem Wiki

-Locksmithing - Salem Wiki

-Pilgrim's Hovel - Salem Wiki

-Category:Houses & Buildings (menu) - Salem Wiki

-Category:Buildings & Structures - Salem Wiki

Search finds 2 and 3 are definitely not useful. 5 and 6 are... incomplete? I'm not even sure if they're auto-generated or not. If anything the 6th result is the most relevant page.

It just seems like the google search is searching pages we shouldn't really allow it to by default. Category and template pages shouldn't come up on the starter search. I'm not sure how much we can modify that though.

Also points out we need a summary page of "Houses" of some kind that links all the different types.

Maybe that's why results: "Page title matches" and "Page text matches" should be first. Or 1. "Page title matches" 2. Google results 3. "Page text matches".
Also the "template" pages should not come up in searches probably.

Ore and Silver pages need to be converted to new infobox. And Food page need to be smaller - currently it contains lots of tables with all food.
