Maps & Fast Travel

Postby adunato » Mon Dec 10, 2012 2:11 pm

Hello All,

New here, just started playing a day ago or so. I have read about maps tools and also downloaded one, however as I don't seem to have much luck with it (it only imports some of the sessions) I wanted to first check here to make sure I'm not overlooking a much easier way to deal with in-game features before troubleshooting the map tool...

As I understand it there is no way to have an in-game view of the high-level map able to let you know where you are compared to say home or boston or whatever, correct? This means that once you get your homestead assigned (randomly) you end up pretty much 'somewhere' with no clue of how to get back to Boston without fast-travelling, am I missing something or is it maybe a 'beta thing' with a more solid mapping functionality plan for the released version?

Thanks a lot in advance...

It's a community thing to map the world atm. I doubt this will change but never know. You need to explore and learn your area. After that you can find yourself fairly easy on the map. Using enders/bds with the map tool helps alot.

You are correct. Also, with the fast travel to the city, is there really any need to just walk back? As long as you're at your homestead or the city, you can travel back and forth with a full inventory.

As far as further mapping functionality, the devs really haven't discussed much. Haven & Hearth had a cartography skill and a way to make local maps, but when custom clients started coming out and public maps started getting compiled, people stopped using the in-game maps. There have been requests for it, though, and related items such as compasses.

If you want to know the direction back to the capital city, party with a friend who is in the capital, then click on their portrait - you will walk towards them. PS the arrow is trolling you, dont trust that.

Thanks, all good tips. The bit above is what I was missing and with which the whole system makes a lot more sense (still a bit hard but hey... :D)

I clicked my friends profile and so far have walked/run for 9hrs and still not got there and we both started in the same town, really not enjoying this pita game with no ingame world map or a way to find how much further it is
