The only certain things in life are death and taxes. Salem is now the most realistic MMO ever.

People are going to be griefed out of there personal claims now, its going to be the cool thing to do now for these types ....

What are you talking about by being griefed out of their claims? I don't understand how this update changes anything so long as you pay this very minimal upkeep.

And if you don't pay your upkeep I hardly feel anything that happens to your claim would count as griefing...

Are you for real?

So you're saying your a freeloader who doesn't want to pay taxes?

Are you for real?

Obviously you haven't played this game long enough or had any experience playing Haven & Hearth, otherwise you would completely understand why they're doing this. The upkeep costs really aren't that much money. If your reasoning for being able to have a permanent claim is that you want to be able to take more than 2 months off from the game and come back to find your place the way you left it, you need to accept the reality that others have already pointed out numerous times in this thread. If you're gone for that long, your place will likely have been broken into and ransacked anyways. The upkeep costs help active players by removing inactive claims from the game. That frees up real estate without active players having to sink money into dropping a town bell on a claim in order to remove it. You act like this is punishing active players when in fact it's doing the opposite.

Taxes are the devil, why do you think people rebelled and eventually won that war?

Not because taxes in general, but because taxation without represantation. Last time I heard Americans do pay taxes now.

lol. Through the nose and in ways and for reasons that make the Seven Years' War appear like an innocent government function.

We get taxed for air.

My grandparents live in Pennsylvania, and pay a yearly tax of 175$USD for air.

And its not for clean air, either. They leave near Pittsburg, and those steel mills and such up there? The area is awful. Dirty, dingy, and smelly.

But... air. Gods.

The biggest problem with murica isn't that the layman, or even the middle class pay tax. They do that just fine. The problem is a little issue known as the veil of opulence. America is a society designed for the rich, by the rich.

Simple example: Capital gains (investments) are taxed significantly less than income. The only people who have significant portions of their income coming from investments are the rich. By that very nature, less of their income is taxed at the high rate. And that's not even including the fact that the wealthy have been abusing loopholes to avoid taxes (the scandals are all the rage on the news of late). Like donating money to a church (tax free donation), and then they "gift" it back to you (tax free). That was a legit loophole until recently.

But eh, I'm a socialist. I believe in taxes, and I believe in trying to keep the government as free of corruption as possible so that most of those taxes are spent on people/things that need it, and as little wasted as possible.
It's been neat to see the evolution of a game. Salem has come so far, and still has far to go. Although frustrating, I think it's been an experience worth the effort.

So I just had 8 pots of cuttings finish, planted them right after server reset so like 2 days I guess. Out of the 8 pots, only 2 of them gave me trees to plant and my proficiencies are 43 NP, 145 SC, 44 FW. So.... I mean I could raise the other proficiencies but somehow I doubt that'll help much... my conclusion is tree planting is not a replacement for destroying the forest for a plank fence.

yeah im kinda thinking the intent was more along the lines of, being able to put that fancy placed tree inside yer homestead instead of putting yer homestead around that tree location lol.

if they really intend it to be used as a restocking of an area they are gonna have to increase the odds of getting cuts, and sprouts. but hey, it let me chop down that ill placed tree i build my home around, and move one to a more suitable location so its all good!

Why do you all talk about cricket hunting for silver? If I wanted to hunt crickets for hour or two a day I would play one of many boring mmorpg-s further more I wouldn't need a claim for that. Ah, and to all you metal producers. Expect your income to go down since people will have much less silver to spend on your metal due to tax. This will lead to less trees being cut down and less desolated landscape. A great update for trees :D

Tax is fine, when I first show this game to my brother he said "What! You don't need to pay tax for the lend you own?! Thats silly." Its rather small fee for the land one use. I would only suggest more items that can be sold to city NPCs (higher tire cloth or better prices based on purity, tobacco would be nice as well) and ability for others to add silver to your claim stone.
