It takes too long to fill compost and coops.

Postby MonkiePoop » Sun Dec 02, 2012 4:57 am

Since I discovered my technical thread is locked and that apparently Ender's client is the cause for my woes I'd like to thus redirect my opinion here.

It takes too long to fill compost and coops. I'd rather do something else with my time on the game.

A day in the life of a farmer/hunter:
I would really like to go hunting or foraging for inspirationals today.... oh look I have to fill my compost bin... goes out fills sled with crap.... oh look an hour or so of playing and still not enough to fill one compost bin. Ugh...
(Even if you forage for specific items which give higher amounts of input.)

Imagine if you have a really big farm.... you have more than one compost bin per say, or more than one turkey coop... (If you reply, let me know how long it takes you to fill your # of coops and/or bins, and do you use anything special to fill them?)

All I am trying to say is some things in this game take an unrealistic amount of time to complete. I.e. Filling compost and coops. Some things should take time like: learning skills, finding rare materials, laying eggs, or producing crops and humus, but why should it take a long time to throw food for the poultry or throw things in a bin to rot? These things take a trivial amount of time IRL and only prevent players from experiencing other things in game. A farmer may go out in the morning and throw some feed to his poultry or fill a trough... badabing badaboom done. I don't expect instant in a game... but at least please make items worth more? The current settings are effing killer.

I mean how do 6 turkeys need to eat more than 10 WHOLE Colewort (much less the other things I also added)? :?

1 Colewort = about 6 leaves each.

Also I feel that the Mod that replied to my former thread didn't really understand what I was saying, before he locked it. This community is really tough.

Of course I am using Ender's mod. (I didn't realize it was what showed the percentages for filled coops and bins etc., and that this was not in the vanilla game. This should really be added to vanilla.) But that doesn't change the fact that since the patch items fill the bins less. And that it is an arduous endeavor to keep them filled.

I have 3 full turkey coops and about 8 compost bins and i myself cannot keep all the compost bins full, but i take the time to keep the coops full for fear of my turkeys death. You are right, i would have to sit and play for 3/4 hours minimum doing nothing but hunting deer and foraging to fill all of these up and my time is precious. Also the deer can be used for more important things. Hunting 16 deer for compost is alot of food out the window. Now i have my town mates help me with filling the bins and one could argue that if i don't have the time to do the work, then don't have that much bins/coops.

All in all i agree that it takes a hell of alot of time to fill everything up by myself. Whether or not it should change is entirely different.

I agree that one person shouldn't be able to have a ridiculous amount of coops or compost bins which they can fill by themselves.

However it shouldn't be so difficult for one person to fill only one of each.

Or maybe there should be a skill that one could level to increase their knowledge of good animal nutrition or good compost-ables, which a player could level to keep the bins fuller longer?

I built my first Turkey coop two days ago. I honestly didn't feel that filling it was all that hard, and the compost bin is even easier.

For the compost bin, I just toss in a few worms and wood choppings now and then.

The Turkey Coop I filled up with meat. Being a low-humor (12 Phlegm, 16 YB), hermit-type currently, I used rabbit meat. It took maybe 30 minutes to:
A.) Find and kill about 20 Rabbits
B.) Put all of the steaks, cuts and meat shreds into the bin.

I had also added a few worms, various mushrooms, and spiked chestnuts to see what numbers they gave.

It honestly isn't that bad, even for a newer player with a fairly undeveloped claim (one farm, no house of any sort yet, no mining, and a firepit being all I can cook on), who has never played Haven & Hearth.

It might be what you are using a food that makes it feel so slow. Perhaps someone should update the Turkey Coop and Compost Bin wiki pages with the values that differing items give? I do know that different meats gave different values. I cannot, as of yet, kill Deer or Bears, and can only kill a Beaver maybe 50% of the time, but I could gather the data on what I CAN get and add it myself, if anyone thinks that this is a good idea.

I mean think about it.... feeding Turkeys meat..........really?

Also, the wiki needs all the help it can get.

Wild turkey's can and will eat meat, though.

I currently live in Ohio, having moved here recently from West Virginia. Turkey's are very, very common wild game here, and I had frequently come across them in the wooded area near my home in West Virginia. Turkey's are omnivorous - it is not uncommon to see them pecking at carrion, and they do hunt down and eat lizards. We left them alone when they wandered into our yard, since my family has seen them chasing down and eating snakes - particularly the rattle snakes. Having been bitten by a rattle snake, anything that kills the nasty things is my friend.

So, feeding my turkey's meat in Salem seems perfectly normal and natural to me. I especially enjoy dropping snake cuts into the coop.

Yeah I figured they ate at least carrion. Pretty cool.

But I am mostly concerned with the grind. I was having a lot of fun with the game mechanics, crafting, terrain exploration and reformation.

Focus: Seriously hours to fill a coop and/or compost bin?

Thats the thing though - it wasn't a grind for me personally, and it seems like it won't be too hard to keep the coop's feed bar topped up later on. I have 10 wild turkeys in my coop currently, and the bar has only dropped about 8% in the last two days (though, we did have a server restart).

When Enders is updated, I will start gathering numbers as I can for the wiki, since you cannot "over fill" the coop and keep adding food after the bar reaches 100%.
If I see bear and deer meat for sale for cheap on the stalls, I'll get those numbers too, since I cannot kill those animals myself as of yet.
