Barns and farm critters[Solved + more]

Sounds like a very interesting system I haven't seen them yet, but I have built a barn and all, and I am wondering what I should build inside or around it. What items does animal breeding/interacting need on a regular basis?

Should there be a fenced-in area right outside for them to get out of the barn, a la Harvest Moon? Or maybe lots of haystacks and a large water barrel?
