How to make or join a town

Postby Messyng » Sat Dec 31, 2016 5:38 pm

Hello everyone, for example a hermit or two guys that live together want to make a town, what they need to know about recruiting new ppl? Are you expected to have a brickwall at your home and let the others live outside and interact with them and overtime when you can trust them let them in?

How a town is supposed to be and what should be the roles of citizens? What biomes are preferable?

I only was in one when server started and we random ppl joined and searched together for a place, then we settled, each build a p claim then someone made a town and overall there was not much interaction only when we were cutting some trees or making coal clamps and slowly everyone left or were afk, then again back then you could have all the skills in 2-3 days.

To my understanding if all are new characters over time you can see with what ppl you are playing, but if you want to join a town, what you should expect? What if you want to start in Popham or when new expedition is out?

for sure my experience
1. if you not trust 100% member town
then don't give "Assign permissions" because player with this permission, can give all permissions...
and don't give "Manage claims" because player can remove all pclaim with Mayor pclaim :)
this two option give BIG mechanic for betrey Town

2. always player when build pclaim it's attractive:
need lime spot,
good clay spot,
good many "mine" spots
water spots

3. good option's have good defense Town Bell

or i don't undestand for what you ask us :D

There's also a Trial Membership option for new members if you're not sure about them yet and want to reduce their opportunity to betray you if they turn out to be a spy. This prevents them from building or destroying and prevents the same in their party members (when you're in a party, everyone in it has the same permissions you have).

A good clay spot is one that is huge?
Can you explain what are ''good'' and why ''many'' mine spots? Because now that I can prospect I find or a water or a iron looking one.

A brick wall is not required for a town but an eventual Brick wall covering your vital spots and farms should be in your long term plan.

As for recruiting people, if you have a microphone at all use a Teamspeak, Ventrillo or Discord channel to talk to them for a day or two before giving them access to any part of the town. This will let you get to know them before they join, in case they are someone you wouldn't want to play with.

wtf are you talking about? A brick wall is absolutely required to keep your town safe.

You want relatively nearby lime and some sort of river or lake. You also want a mine node (iron or copper color, they don't matter it's all the same) which will be within your town claim. You only need one, really. That's the big stuff.

Somewhat less important but still great to have is a clay node within not too far walking distance because you'll probably be building a brick wall. Also, try to situate yourself so that you are on as flat of land as you can. If there are a lot of rolling hills or cliffs, consider finding a new site, or learn to love digging because you'll soon find problems when you have to level everything before you build on it.

Some other pluses (in my opinion) are a nearby beach for the crabs and salt and stuff and that can be a lake rather than the ocean. Fen (light green) is a good biome to have nearby because beavers spawn there but they also spawn around beaches and some rivers. And try not to put your settlement anywhere in the middle of where squirrels, spiders or especially turkeys are spawning a lot, it'll drive you crazy.

You can also do it this way if you can't settle on a good spot with clay/lime. I've built my actual town a decent way away from any clay or lime pits and I use an alt setup between a couple of clay/lime pits to gather and then transfer the materials to my town. A mine though is essential and if you can find a small lake for sifting/water gathering that is completely claimable then you're golden. I've seen a few lakes that're around 20x30 or so in the past but I am not sure where they are now. A lot of people will tell you to avoid rivers though due to some people who travel rivers on a canoe just looking for places to raid.
