Unable to log in

After taking a break for Salem I have finally managed to convince a friend to give this game a try and decided to come back only to find out that I can't log in.
After logging in I get a black screen and a few minutes later I am returned to the login screen.
I've deleted my previous Salem client, tried using the classic, Ender and Latikai clients, added "http://game.salemthegame.com/" to java exceptions, nothing works. Same problem for my friend who's never had Salem on his PC before.

Not using any antivirus or firewall software, I am using java 1.8.0_111 and my isp is RDS Romania.

So what can I do about this?

Try entering the console during character selection screen, by hitting the " : " key, and then keep typing to get the complete command

:gl meshmode d


then hit enter, and try logging on.

Unfortunately I don't even get to the character selection screen, I get a black screen as soon as I hit login.
I tried entering the command on the black screen, but it doesn't do anything.

Is there really no one here who's encountered this problem? I was really hoping to teach my friend the wonders of murder and paranoia in Salem on new year's eve, now I'm just gonna have to make do with some Factorio.

I've tried adding the hosts in case it's a DNS issue, still nothing.
Is there some way at least to see the output/error logs so I can find out which step fails to work?

What is your friends os? Maybe try running as administrator?

Also are you running the most up to date software for Salem?

Do you get an error output from Java?

Some old graphic cards driver can not handle new java versions and salem game.

Maybe try an older Java version.
But with "Not using any antivirus or firewall software" you should be careful then.

Do you use maybe newest Windows 10? If yes, i was reading about some issues with Java Programs like Salem, you will find much entries in Minecraft Forum too.

We are both using Windows 7.

I am not getting any sort of error, the screen just becomes black after hitting the log in button for a couple minutes then I am sent back to the login screen.

I've tried running as administrator, no change.

I have a geforce gtx 680 video card with up to date drivers, it's definitely not new, but by no means unable to handle Salem, and it did work just fine a few months ago. I don't know the exact video card model my friend uses, but it's a newer model than mine.

I guess I'll try using java 7, though I somehow doubt no one here has updated to java 8.
