your hosts file is a file called hosts that is found in the folder c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

you edit it with a text editor and add the lines darknacht said to add, then save and log onto the game.

Is notepad ok or use a different tool. Saved it to all files but still didn't work

Turn on file extension displays(google it if you dont know how) then remove the .txt at the end of the file after editing, it will say some "are you sure" stuff but just hit yes and it'll return to a standard file as it was originally.

If you have problems to save the file directly, in reason of user rights, copy it first to the Desktop, edit it there, save it and copy it back to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\

We figured it out using the info supplied by you guys. Luckily this forum doesn't have issues when the other is inaccessible. Thanks for the help!

Some people are actually having problems accessing the forums and game or just can't access forums and can still get in-game. Its a real ***** going on.

I couldn't get into the game or the http://forum.salemthegame.com/ forums. I was googling for info and found the viewforum.php?f=5 forums. Which they both appear to be linked up but only one is accessible atm.

i'm using newly updated Windows 10; for me I had to use msconfig to boot directly to Safe Mode to alter the protected Hosts file. (I have multiple OS on this PC and have to choose which HDD to boot from- thus F8 isn't an option for me.) It was always easy to open with Wordpad or Notepad but it never let me save it as such even if I open 'As Administrator'- always became another 'txt' file in the folder.

Safe Mode allowed me to save as same File type and avoided all the 'Access Denied' and 'Another program is using this file' even though no other applications were open in Task Manager.

Getting out of safe mode was a slight problem; but you just have to find the msconfig application manually... and all done.

Works great. Hope this helps.
