That's not exactly true, in some countries there are bloodthirsty people who do nothing else all day than sniffing traffic and sueing people for downloading, sharing or even watching stuff online illegally.
Those are usually not direct employees of companys that own those copyrights, but freelancers who do this for a living, stealing from other people that is.

Without piracy, we would not have DVDs.
When they came up, in the average persons home there was like 1 legally bought DVD out of 10 they owned, which helped spread the DVD by a whole lot, because who would buy a (then expensive) DVD player for just 1 movie!?
You'd had to buy a lot more to make use of that player, and many, many people would not have done so.
But without the "pirated" ones, they would not have bought the DVD player and not the legal one DVD, and sure not all those they bought afterwards over the years to come.
Their "old" tapes worked well, and unlike DVDs those days you could just record everything you saw on TV on them (unlike DVDs, as it were just players, not recorders), and re-use them, they were in fact MUCH more versatile, and further taking into account that most people did not even own a TV that would make use of DVDs increased quality, the only pro DVD argument was their smaller size, and for proper storage you'd need to store them in their case which is like just 1/3 or so of a tape, not much reason really to spend that much money those days.

Back when I was in school, I was the 2nd person on that school to own a CD-burner, double speed those days, and it costed as much as your favorite gaming console costs now, just the burner.
I payed that from money I save up, and got it back within a month by copying stuff for friends and schoolmates, no one would have thought of thinking of it as a crime those days.
There was a tape from dead kennedys that read on the B side "Home taping is killing record industry profits! We left this side blank so you can help.".

TL;DR:
This whole topic is so filled up with lies and greed, you don't really want to elaborate on that, do you?

there is a difference between a lawyer and a local cop with more important **** to do.

also it always amuses me how euro's are always the first to try and justify their theft of the work of others, must be the underlying socialism that infects the culture, if you have to make ends meet by copying CDs and DVDs to sell you need to reevaluate your life and the bad decisions you are making

when dvd burners first came out i dropped almost 500 bucks on one because i wanted a dvd burner for increased storage capacity over cd, the thought of being a ***** and trying to sell ****** bootleg movies did not even cross my mind. but then again i do not pick up discarded cigarette butts to smoke either

also the dead kennedys are a bunch of worthless california neo commie liberals with horribly **** music that sounds like a cat on lsd ***** rocks into a plastic bucket.

What you said is just beyond retarded. We have dvds because of massive increased storage, we have cds because of the massive increased storage from a floppy disk. Piracy is a zero factor in these becoming popular.

Wow, that's horrible. I guess pirating is a lot more common in some places than others.

it is extremely prevalent in third world ***** and scummy low income areas of europe, in asian countries and the middle east you have every ***** around sitting on a pile of dirt with the intellectual property of their superiors spread out on their camel blanket. this is why us civilized folks are charged more than we would normally be and why things like "country codes" exist in players/media.

the same is done with things like pharmaceuticals, it is so bad in india that even the big hospitals have ***** drugs that people die from all the time as they are cooked up in a basement from some uneducated moron that prints false labels and sells a watered down or otherwise inferior version, pills made out of cement filler and so on.

Do you have fun making fun of yourself like that?
You have any clue of what you are talking about?

When the CDs came out, it was a jump from then 1.44MB floppys, which is HUGE, there were zip drives and stuff too, but they were neither common nor particularily useful due to no one having them and other "compatibility" related issues, there neither was USB which is a far underestimated technological step that enables many others things.

When DVDs came out, it was a huge jump from a CDs point of view, but you did not store your movies on CDs before that, did you?!
And for the PC, it was ...neglectable, in the meantime (time between CD and DVD) there have come up other means to store data, and also mobile storage, that later further refined in what we know today as a USB stick and portable hard drive, which are both in their respective field far superrior to DVDs.
They were ok for selling increasingly bigger (file size I mean) games and other programs though,
but if you ever used DVDs for data storage, you did something wrong.

And well for the movie side of it, as I explained already, DVDs were ...meh.
Hard drives still beat DVD at storage, same for movies, that was the case when DVDs came out, and is far more true today.
DVDs again were good for selling movies n stuff on them, and with todays cheap DVD recorders and big, high resolution TVs they actually make sense, but that was not the case when they were new.

[edit:] With todays shift in the commercial model behind it, rather selling downloads than hard copys, DVDs and even blue rays n stuff are well past their best days, but again, there was a time when DVDs were actually a good thing for movies, especially a good medium for buying them on, but pretty much everything that makes a DVD useful for that was not there when they came out.

taipion continues to make an idiot of himself as usual because 600 mb to over 4.7 gigs with the originals is "neglible" and never would have taken off without the "help" of "heroes" like him to steal from the people who created the technology and platform

your just a ******** like all the other soggy shoed assholes that think soccer is a mans sport or that eve is a pvp game.
