Graphics do not equal gameplay. Neither does sound. Graphics and sound design are there to supplement gameplay, and if you believe that the supplement is what makes a game good, you are a fool. It's like saying that pictures in a book will make or break the story. The games forego gameplay in favor of graphics are shallow diversions, a waste of time and effort. If you want graphics, Dwarf Fortress has a large number of tilesets to choose from. If you want sound effects and music, there is a side utility called soundsense that reads the gamelog and plays sounds accordingly. Unlike some games that require modders to make mods to fix a game, none of these player made things for dwarf fortress are actually required to make the game playable. They are little more than luxuries.
Fun fact, when I first heard some of the music in Salem, it wasn't the first time I'd heard that music. About half of the outdoors music in Salem is also used in soundsense.
