That's kinda harsh, saying only a 'nerd' is capable of having an actual imagination.

You're acting like graphics shouldn't be a thing because everyone can just use their imagination.
While you're at it just remove the sound too, you can use your imagination for that too.
Oh just remove the whole game, you can just imagine you're playing it.
Even remove your computer, you can imagine using it.

try it, it's kinda fun if you play it with the right group
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

I remember that when I was small and the computer was occupied by someone else I used to play Dune 2 on paper.
I would draw the map, spice deposits, my base, units and all that stuff. Move them around, pew pew etc. until the drawing was such a mess that you couldn't see anything.

Yeah and if you could play it I'm sure you'd jump right off that drawing and go get some melange on the computer instead, cuz ***** using your imagination.

I love good graphics. But I've also had quite a lot of fun on MUDs and Angband is still one of my favorite games. Good graphics doesn't make it good and lack thereof doesn't make it stupid. I've never played Dwarf Fortress myself, but I'm thinking maybe now I'll give it a try.

Graphics do not equal gameplay. Neither does sound. Graphics and sound design are there to supplement gameplay, and if you believe that the supplement is what makes a game good, you are a fool. It's like saying that pictures in a book will make or break the story. The games forego gameplay in favor of graphics are shallow diversions, a waste of time and effort. If you want graphics, Dwarf Fortress has a large number of tilesets to choose from. If you want sound effects and music, there is a side utility called soundsense that reads the gamelog and plays sounds accordingly. Unlike some games that require modders to make mods to fix a game, none of these player made things for dwarf fortress are actually required to make the game playable. They are little more than luxuries.

Fun fact, when I first heard some of the music in Salem, it wasn't the first time I'd heard that music. About half of the outdoors music in Salem is also used in soundsense.
