I mean, I would think that if the church singles out a person for accusation of something, whether it be theft or witchcraft, I would think you'd have a mob trying to earn the church's good will, especially given the time period of the Salem Witch Trials.
Yes and they did that by all adhering to the unspoken agreement that any singled out individual is a filthy heathen that deserves to die and eat copious amounts of tomato! It's easier to show your support to the church by flailing a torch and shouting "BURN THE WITCH", than it is to go "I'm such a filthy sinner watch my stylish crown of thorns". Anyone that did that would likely have ended up singled out as well unless they were already in a position of power.
