I know that are one of the two parties and i have a really generic idea of what the two parties want, but I intentionally avoided to read more, in order to not get influenced.
In the US, our main political parties right now are Democrat and Republican. There are also Liberals and Conservatives and Libertarians and some other smaller ones. Liberals are most like Democrats and so tend to vote with them, and Conservatives and Libertarians are most like Republicans and tend to vote with them.
So, a quick rundown on what each group believes in:
Democrats believe in high taxes, especially for wealthier people. They favor government regulations on business, the economy, and 'consumer protection'. They tend to want a smaller military. They are pro-choice when it comes to abortion laws. They usually want universal healthcare. They support wellfare and other government help for the disadvantaged. They want free international trade agreements and loose immigration, especially for illegal immigrants who are already here. They want strict gun control and fewer guns for the people.
Some Liberals are a sort of extreme Democrat, but the beliefs do differ here and there. They are all about personal freedom, and yet also greatly favor government control. So, they support equality and civil liberties and usually want laws to back that up. They tend to be pro-choice, but plenty are also pro-life. They prefer government help for the disadvantaged and strict regulation of the economy by the government. They want lower personal taxes, but higher business taxes and want business to be strictly regulated. They believe in universal healthcare funded by the government. Internationally, they want free trade and loose immigration. They also tend to believe in strict gun control and reduced gun ownership.
Republicans tend to be opposite Democrats in many issues. They favor a free market with little government regulation of the economy, believing that things will sort themselves out without interference. They want a larger military. They want lower taxes for everyone. They also want less government regulation in the economy and most everywhere else with a consequently smaller government. They also tend to want less welfare and other disadvantaged support, believing that such people can be supported by private charities. They are pro-life on the abortion issue. They want stricter immigration laws with no amnesty for illegal immigrants. They support the right to bear arms.
Conservatives are very similar to Republicans. They want not just lower taxes, but a simple flat tax. They also favor free market and larger military. They want all welfare type support to be done by private charities and personal savings for things like retirement, not by the government. They want very little government interference in the economy at all. They agree with Republicans otherwise.
Libertarians support both personal and government liberties. They think the government should be very small with minimum bureaucracy and a focus mainly on protecting civil liberties. They favor a free market with little governmental regulation. They want lower taxes for everyone with a simple flat tax. They support the right to bear arms. They want all welfare and healthcare to be personal or private charity, not government provided. In these ways they are similar to Conservatives. However, like Liberals, they are all about personal freedom. They are tolerant of diverse lifestyles and promote civil liberties and so support things like gay marriage and anti-censorship. They are often pro-choice. They support the rule of law and believe that while immigrants should not be given amnesty, the immigration laws need to change.
This is just a summary since it's rather off-topic , but I hope it clears things up for you.
