You only get this flame if you have madness right? So why not just cure that before gathering more coal?

Just play a trumpet or keep cheap inspirationals in your inventory(trumpet is better and doesn't clutter up the inventory)

You'll never waste time going to do some jack things you don't need at the time if you just play the trumpet 4-5 times every 30 minutes to an hour.

Just wait 36-48 hours before collecting coal from finished piles.

I have been hit 3x... but always from 'fresh' piles... never from older ones.

Also noticed you are more likely to get 'hit' from fresh piles if you attempt to collect more than 100+ coal in any one attempt. Besides... if you do get hit... you'll dump less on the ground moving smaller quantities.

(I get this might not be a problem if your Sparks/Ember prof (that provides bonus to coal yield) is <300 ... but something to keep in mind down the road.)

please don't spread misinformation. You can only get this as a madness episode, and I constantly collect full inventories (1024 coal) several times at madness 0 without ever getting a single spark. You could also just put your coal piles next to some stockbins so you can quickly dump all your inventory coal away instead of dropping it to the floor and picking it up piece by piece ...
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

I don't think you read my post :P you don't even have to go through that trouble, just collect 2000 coal and every single time the flame appears you justshift click it into your backpack.

How old a pile is or how much coal is in your inventory has nothing to do with the flame. It's a random madness event which is more common the more mad you are, just like all the events. Any correlation to anything besides madness level you may think you see is an illusion, for all events.

JC should really add something like Hafens shortcut where holding shift and right-clicking an item will automatically pick up any of that item around.
