I heard if you attempt to buy something but have insufficient funds, it appears momentarily in your inventory, letting you see how many charges remain. I haven't tried it.

Except that you would need to leave your funds at home because it will pull the fund regardless of where the money is in the inventory/backpack, etc.

it works, but it's a major pain in the ass - on fast internet connections it's gone in the blink of an eye, and as Max outlined, you can't have any silver on you at all, not even in your inventory.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.
