Whilst I do think it's rather lonesome sometimes, I think that's kinda the point. Even when we're on teamspeak or discord, talking to our friends, we still feel the vast distance between us.
If global chat was added it would be like walking in one of the major cities in any other mmo, we'd see tons of trade spam, people arguing, Darwoth making players piss themselves. town chat is the most global a chat should be :P no one will spam random **** in there, and you can always pm your friends or get on a teamspeak if you wanna banter. But a global chat would kinda take away from the point of settling far away from Boston/Providence.

Just allow X person to create a custom chat channel, let's call it the alliance chat system for easy reference.
Allow this channel admin to invite, kick and disband his channel.

To not litter the database with a bunch of chats or whatever, just limit it so that you can only create 1 per account.

Do your research as to why this wouldn't work. You have no idea whats under the hood in salem to make that call. Not to mention the thread has JC saying he doesn't want this in game.

I cant wait to see what turd you churned out in game maker or unity.

I don't get what is so hard about having to use Skype. I mean, personally I wouldn't want anyone in a special channel where they may receive special information if I have not confirmed who they are IRL.

Too ***** many.
making people use an outside source for communication really protects you from your own retardation. This is like the one nice thing JC has done for us please don't take that away.

for short term communications to groups you can just party and it gives you a channel you can use

If we don't use Skype, then how will my in-game friends know that I'm playing nude?
I realize I could type "guise im nood", but that doesn't have quite the impact as them actually having to view my naked, Rubenesque figure each time they message me. I feel so free and vulnerable and I'm scared ally chat would rob me of that feeling...

I'd say this game is designed for alliances at about the same level life is. Maybe a bit less due to the fact that it's a lot easier to be an ass to someone you've never seen. Which just makes another text channel sound even less like a good idea.

You're right, I don't know what is under the hood of Salem. However I do know that a system like described would take only a few hours to make from scratch in Java, and maybe a few more to implement it into a chat system built on terrible code structure.

Dallane plz, sending text over network is not hard.

Replace Java with whatever programming language the game source is made with.
Programming is all about logic, and unless the source is built like a maze made out of potatoes, then it is not hard to implement said system.

It's better to just say that you wont do it, or don't understand how to do it rather than saying it's too difficult because it's not.
