some notes for returning players

Postby bocage » Wed Apr 06, 2016 3:29 pm

I have returned to Salem after more than a year off. I am happy to see lots of new stuff in the game. However, some of the changes messed up my old characters. They got several madness levels and lost all of their inventory. I think this is due to logging out without a homestead. It would have been nice to have been notified of this change in game somehow when logging in my old characters. They ended up naked and half crazy by the time I figured out the new mechanics.

There are notifications for this. Upon gaining your first madness level there is a pop-up to notify players of this. My guess is that you didn't get that notification because you characters were already messed up or you got it and clicked it away quickly. There are notifications for major important things at the edge of twilight there is a notification you are entering darkness. Another for disease. Also the requirement for a homestead has been greater than a year. Seems like you have been gone much longer.

I didn't get the first notifications for madness because I was not online when the madness levels were building up. Yes, it has been more than a year. Beds were not implemented at that time. I did not know anything about beds. So when I logged off, my characters stayed in game for hours, earning madness while I was offline. Either because I had no homestead or because the game considered me to not have finished the tutorial yet. I got one of the tutorial messages even though I was not in the tutorial area. I did not get a notification about madness until I logged back in later. At the time of re-logins my 3 characters had madness levels of 4, 6, and 7 and were naked. Luckily I logged back in at a time that they were not ko or dead from madness. If they had died from madness while I was offline I would have rage quit and ended up not coming back to the game.

wierd. I logged out long ago without a bed and when i came back my character is still mostly intact. I promptly make a leafy bed and solve that problem.
Saved 250s and buy yourself a teddy bear and sleep it off.
You thought I quit.

Why don't they have homesteads?

Even from long ago you could not log out if you did not have a claim. The only way to get someone to log out was to have the server reset on you other wise you just stood there. That was before madness and beds. Also you cannot sleep in a bed unless you have a homestead. You cannot log out in the tutorial as that character will be erased. Tutorial messages will popup at the first occurrence someone reaches that state. You walk into darkness the first time you get a message about it. You gain your first madness level you get a message about it. My bet is when you logged back on and triggered a level you saw the message for the first time. Heck there is a first time message about dying for the first time; that one is fun to read...

Could your 3-4 characters with tons of madness be that valuable to make you quit?

In some cases the homestead was destroyed by another player. It was likely destroyed a long time ago. In some cases the character had never created a homestead. In the old system a homestead was not needed to log off. I had an alt-vault character in Providence still with initial biles but full inventory of rare drops. I am pretty certain this character never created a homestead and likely had never ventured out of Providence. My last play time would have been around May 2014.

I am a casual player. The characters are not very valuable. But it would have been very annoying to have them all die just for logging in and logging out.
