Pretty sure he means that as a preventive measure for town members who may get wise and not an attacker. When being raided they are likely going for the town bell and not some claim off to the side.

Do you have to replace it? I thought splash damage works only, when the "second" wall taking splash damage is of same or less strength. So it would be possible to build from outside to inside a layer of better and better fences. That is what I read in (maybe old) forum threads.

My defense right now is: Split-rail Fence outside, followed by a Stone Hedge. That is what I, as a newbie, could build. Even though finding granite was not that easy. I planned to build the next best fence directly behind the Stone Hedge. Is this a big mistake, because Splash damage will hurt me?

To me, being an authentic newbie for the sake of discussion, this guide was helpful, mostly because of the number of phlegm you need to break a wall. This was new to me and not to be found in the wiki. And it is scary that my stone wall could be broken with less than 100 biles. So much for a good sleep.

I find it annoying to open and close all the doors all the time so as most of people I end up closing only one ore two of the strongest. Now if you dont go out often that might not be an issue. I also noticed that some people leave their doors opened, probably cause they are too lazy to open/close all of them all the time and sometimes they forget to close them before they log out. So its better to have only two walls and keep doors closed all the time than 6 walls with 5 opened doors.
You are right about the splash so dont worry about it. Its just all the doors that are annoying.

Leaving your gates open when logging out is like a pile of candy to any thief

If its that annoying buy some springs, they aren't that expensive from the cash shop or from other players selling for silver. Particularly useful when you move around a lot of gates with a cart ;)
Do not argue with idiots, for they will pull you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

That is an option too and you get to support the game. But still it would be a waste to use it on splitrail or even stone hedge.

Would be cool if it dropped when you destroyed the gate
