Item shop stuff lets you get a foothold quickly and easily, but it doesn't significantly put you ahead. You could easily powergame for as little as 4-5 hours to get back what an item shop gives.

Mostly it just gives pretty clothes.

I don't think the item shop gives that big an advantage. I can grind 300 silver an hour easily just by killing crickets with a pretty new character, it dosn't take that much grinding to get enough silver for what you need.
