Separate Mining Post?

Postby Chimm » Fri Feb 12, 2016 11:52 pm

I made an error and took a "Well Point" for an "Ore Point". Haven't read the wiki and just wandered around with my Woo-Woo-Wand and thought all spots were ore spots.

When I find an ore spot somewhere more or less close to my base, would you suggest to keep my base and open just an additional mining spot?
Anyway I was planning to use a specialized mining ALT Char, so he will do nothing by Mining.

If so, what structures must I plan for the mining base (how big should the second claim be)?
- Mine Entrance
- Ore Smelter
- Anvil
- Some storage
- ... ?

Or would you suggest to build a whole new base around a real ore mine? Pity is, I paid all my spare money in the claimstone. It is paid for the next 2 months already. And the base is not so bad. Clay is nearby and water and stone quarry. Lime a bit farer away. And a game trail is also close.

First off, if you are NOT looking for a well, dont use a woowoo wand but a dowsing rod instead.
Because iirc woowoo wands get iron and well nodes, dowsing rods get iron and copper nodes.
Now that might be a bit confusing but there used to be 2 different types of mines, now they are both the same, yet if I am not mistaken, there are still those 2 types of nodes for mines.

Second, if you love mining, plan ahead to have most stuff inside the mine, this can be all your metal industry buildings and tools, like smelters, trip hammers and forges, actually there are few things that cant be inside a mine.
So plan to have your mine in the center of your settlement, but NOT just store stuff inside before you got a valid defense outside, because anyone can just walk inside your mine an take/destroy all things in there IF they can make it past your walls.

Also, for a nice spot to have a settlement, especially a mining-focused one, you DO want to have:
- a water source nearby, let alone for sifting, you do NOT want to port to providence for that, really
- lime nearby, you can port in lime but that needs at least 2 halfway well made chars and is even then not comfortable
- clay nearby, this is a bonus mostly because it is not absolutely needed if you have water and lime nearby, but it helps
- biome diversity, I don't find that terribly important if the spot is not in a miles big dessert or so, but it helps, too

No- be it copper or iron...it's the same node; Devs just haven't gotten around to solidifying previous code with current... Any mine node you find iron or copper is same.

This is very, very misleading. You have to ask yourself... are you here waiting for something else to come out....some other game...or are you here for the long haul? if you dig deep enough you'll connect your Mine to all others at the same level... so having it in the middle of your town might be a bad choice as everyone else who's made it to that level could come boiling out into the middle of your defenses!

it's long range planning but you should do it regardless...it's impossible to relocate a Mine after the fact. The more you hide in a Mine, the more tempting it is for Raiders. I'm no expert on the this, but folks who hide all their productivity and storage are more likely to get raided as folks jsut want to know what you are hiding?... Maybe nothing, but they don't know that.

Water is pretty important for sifting rubble... you can get away with porting to town, but you can never do it encumbered and you will almost always have 'extra'...

Clay and diversity are important... but you can cheat with multiple accounts... but your PC and Internet provider (your ISP) must be able to handle mutliple accounts at the same time. If you are struggling with one account... you might very well need to relocate or moderate your expectations!

You realize you disagreed and then said the same thing he just said? Yes, the node may have either iron colored or copper colored streaks, but it's the same thing, a mine.

You need not be too concerned with this. Mine level 8 is the only level that can reach 100% pure, yes, and mining there can break into Dreamworld where someone else might find your access point and invade. But so long as you don't mine on that level, you're fine.

@ deepsixed:

I said copper and iron nodes look different but are the same, please read before post.

Also it is NOT misleading, if you want a lvl 9 mine, you go somewhere else and do it there.
But for the mine in the center of your town, you go at max to lvl 8 and just use it for space, that easy.

Also, no one can see what is inside your mine, your conclusions are a bit flawed.

I've heard that pulling any boulder from the wall on level 8 can uncover a door (not a cave-down) to the Dreamworld.

I can't speak from first-hand experience.
