Once again, not a proper fix or balance.
So, what would be a proper fix or balance? You say you have a stall, but you keep it empty, why? It's easy to complain about things, but not so easy to come up with a good solution. How about giving us a reason why you keep your stall empty of goods instead of using it? What's the point of paying for something you aren't getting any benefit out of?
I much prefer the idea of reputable traders buying and selling on the Trade threads, and we have so many mechanics more in need of balancing and so many new ideas to develop, we don't have a lot of time to think about stalls. But we certainly can talk about it here if anyone can think of something good.
Right now, what are the issues? We have tried to make it difficult for someone to form a monopoly of stalls by adding the hefty price tag, the one/character requirement, and the skill that you have to put at least a little effort in to get, but Salem doesn't put a restriction on accounts or characters, so one person could still own everything if they really really wanted to. So, if we assume that isn't something we want, what can we do instead of or in addition to what we are doing to discourage people having multiple stalls, or to encourage them to want only one? That's the first issue.
The second is that people who have stalls hang on to them forever, even if they aren't using them, even of they don't plan to use them any time soon. So, how do we, while still discouraging buying all the stalls, make it undesirable for people who aren't using their stalls to drop them?
Finally, no matter how many stalls we have, we won't have enough for everyone and we don't want a 'temp stall' system like you find in some MMOs, so how do we also keep it balanced so that Tradewinds traders remain competitive?
As much as I am sure some people hate the idea, what if the stalls were changed to be used in person? Where you would have to be sitting at a chair at the stall and actively accepting trades, so its much like barrel trading, only safer in that it protects your goods inside from others through use of a buying/selling system that could be anywhere from as simply as having to click a "sell to player" button when they try to buy said item, or much like a actual trade window where you both have to hit confirm to finish the deal. It can still cost money through requiring a market license, whose fee can be one time only or annually (and gives you access to any of the stalls not in use), and still require the market skill to sit at and use the stall. What does this mean? The stalls will get used when they are needed to be used by people who actively want to sell their wares, rather than being unmanned which, is still pretty unrealistic.
Afraid of bots? Im 90% sure witches would curse you to dead because your bot wouldn't know how to run from a witch dance. Plus, I doubt they would risk losing everything by being banned for cheating, meaning they cant just afk and have an account logged in permanently to occupy said stall forever.
And hey, it makes sense that you would have to actually be present to sell your goods, a stall just helps you maintain security for it.
edit: And to those who say "well on plymouth..." Plymouth was the dark ages where everything got screwed over and the population had hit its worst. Who cares about what happened in the past? This game is actively being changed and patched for the better.
