Essentially it would work more like a farmer's market

I find this to be the most beneficial change.

The problem isn't that the rental price is too low, the problem is empty stalls that sell nothing and aren't used. Make it so they have to use the stalls or they lose them.

Instead of raising the rent, what you should do is make it so that rent increases exponentially the longer the stall doesn't sell anything at all. This way the empty stalls and the stalls with stuff in them but not selling anything would start losing more money.

The way this would work:

If a stall doesn't sell anything for a month the rent would double. If it doesn't sell anything for 2 months it doubles again. etc...

This would clear most legacy stalls with thousands of silver in them by summertime or force rich players to actually sell things and USE their stalls.

Another option would be to simply free up any stall that doesn't sell anything for 3 months and put any money in the stall plus part of the auctioned purchase price in the bank for the player. This would also free up the stalls.

Time to tear your stupid idea apart.

Walk up to stall
Insert item for 1 silver then buy
360 and walk away

Fun fact I still got 2 empty stalls with enough rent to last a year

This would be fine. The problem isn't non-playing players who occasionally come on to fill their bell. It's people who no longer play who have 20,000 in it and never check it.

But that does nothing to address the existing empty stalls and poorly utilized stalls (eg, things that no one will buy or are poorly priced) that do nothing except interfere with the overall stall and taxation mechanics for all players involved aside from the handful of people who own them and might eventually use them for something someday.

Rental price is what could fix it. People who are holding empty stalls might decide it's not worth all the silver. And increased rent cost is not a problem for people who sell a lot of stuff.

Of course that doesn't factor for Darwoth who gets a lot of free silver from town ranking

but yes, rental price is simply too darn low.
At least, back when I had a stall and I couldn't be bothered with it, I had a choice: I had something like 50-60k in till, which meant that it could last over a year of rental. At 200s a week, the expense was so small compared to my income aside from that that I could have just said ***** it, I'll keep the stall.
I ended up selling it, because that way at least someone else has a use for it. But many people do not think that way (and indeed, i find myself thinking often that a stall might come in handy every once in a while).
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

All empty stalls and/or stalls with only singular items of unreasonable value have had their rent increased to 1,000/week.

I reserve the right to manipulate an empty stall at any given time.

How do you define this unreasonable value?

Is it a temporary change or will those stalls have such rent forever now? ^^

edit: I still stand with my old idea of rental price changing dynamically over time - if all stalls are claimed then the rental price should keep rising. Freeing a stall should drop the price for all stalls

I do like the idea of all the stalls knowing this type of global market effect. As it stands though they are far more limited in their information. As for items of unreasonable value I was mainly referring to people who had one carrot of lower aether for 400 silver... or some such.
