Shooting from Canoe

Hey, why is it that I can sometimes shoot from a canoe and sometimes I can't?

Edit: Is it some sort of angle thing? Like I have to make sure to shoot from one side of the canoe versus another?

It's not something I really do, but I think the canoe's hitbox can get in your way.

Same thing happens with horses.
