Blood Shards

Someone told me that blood shards disappear out of your inventory once the blood moon ends. Is this true?

By the way I sifted little bit, got some blood shards, studied some and got one madness level.
Is it from the studying or from the sifting giving those shards?

Studying the blood shard does indeed make you insane.
