Tips for your past self/new players

Postby Telcular » Mon Sep 21, 2015 12:13 am

Simply if you could tell your past self something, when you were still new to the game, what would it be?
For me it would be;

• Don´t mess with rattle snakes.
• Same goes for bears and cougers.
• The wiki is your friend.
• Don´t spend too much time in town or you may get diseased.
• Better log off if you need to afk for an undetermined amount of time.
• Your first base will likely get replaced by a far better spot in the future, so don´t get too attached.
• Having water within reasonable distance is excellent for fishing traps and sifting rubble, aswell as various other tasks that need water.
• Once you can get a stove, get one, and try keeping it lit all the time. Using a torch on it for lighting other things you need lit is -way- less frustrating than breaking countless tinder drills, and it can be easily refilled by just using any tinder on it.
• A claim stone should be gotten as soon as possible when you have your camp set up, to prevent most small-time thieves from taking your goods.
• Beavers are a great source of silver, their dried hides sell good and the lard they can drop can be made into soap to sell even more.
• Sleeping in any sort of bed gives you more inspiration compared to just logging off, and its instant to do so.
• Pig Iron and Nails are usually cheaper to buy from player stalls, compared to vendors.
• Crime may be tempting to easily aqquire silver/goods from others, althou beware that it may punish you severely if your scent is picked up and followed by more experienced people.
• Visit the estate owner by the graveyard in town once in a while and pay him to "record" your stats, incase you would die, you will not have to start over -all- the way from the start•.
• Having, or building your next base around a mine is a good way to make sure you never run low on iron/rubble.
• Seriously use the wiki, it will save you alot of trouble.

• "Stay in the light. Darkness drains your bile overtime at a faster rate the deeper you are, and houses some nasty creatures capable of murder." -RainbowMoostache
• "Whittle, fish, cook, catching butterflies, pot plants, or forage flowers to keep your insanity at bay. Luxury options such as hookah, teddybear and tobacco will be available to you further in the gameplay as you progress. Teddybears decrease madness levels, beds decrease insanity amount within that madness level." -RainbowMoostache
• "The better bed you got, the better inspiration restore rate." -RainbowMoostache
• "Buy the materials of the teddybear if unable to craft and not the teddybear itself. Witches can curse teddybears." -RainbowMoostache

Aim to purchase a plague doctor mask with your first silvers

#1 - Do Not Set Up a Home Near Town.
You can teleport to town from your Claimed lean-to as long as you are not carrying more than your weight limit, and teleport back From town to the lean-to.
Setting up near town makes you an easy target for thieves and murderers.

#2 - Pick every flower and learn to whittle asap!
Madness kills, and can ruin your character's life long before that - picking flowers helps keep insanity low, and whittling about 6 items an hour will keep it at 0 as long as you're not performing actions that specifically raise insanity (pulling tails off of salamanders, killing turkeys squirrels or frogs, licking moldy boards, etc).
Just remain vigilant in keeping insanity down. You won't be able to afford a cure for a madness level early on - you need 200+ affluence of artifacts on your clothes to enter the hookah den, equipping a teddy bear and sleeping 8 hours requires the teddy bear which is usually over 500 silver, and tobacco is both expensive and unreliable.

#3 For all those recipes that use "Fiber" just hit the beach and pick some reeds, use one on another to make fibers.

Not only is this a quick and easy way to get fiber right from the start, but you sometimes get a cattail when you combine them - cattails can be added to clothing to give a bonus to Rummage, which gives you a small % chance to get 2x items whenever you 'pick' anything.
(you also occasionally pull up a Torn Tentacle with a reed)

* Don't store tons of goods in your less defended base! People who search for easy accessible bases, want to look always if there are much storages.
* Don't build up things for that you need wrought iron BEFORE you build brazier with them. It suggest that you have valuable things AND you are not well defended.

Ahh and the important thing:

* Don't left-click with item on cursor if you stand in water! ;)

Research a general idea of what you want your character to be BEFORE getting too involved with them. That way you can focus your skills toward that goal. Now I have a toon with a ton of skills that I don't even use. My alt is more focused though and I use my main to feed and grow my alt. Kinda like a sugar daddy! :P
