Yes, agreed. I was using an example of 3 specific Profs to 300 (for example: Mines & Mountains, Hammer & Nail, and Stocks & Cultivars). The number you cite is for raising all 15 to 300.

The actual numbers don't matter that much. You will not ever be as efficient as you'd like and sometimes you have to burn inspiration on inefficient things just to not cap out.

To me, the answer to your question is - yes, everyone should round out their skills to some point where they have access, eventually, to every advanced skill to run a base. At that point, you would want to specialize in something. You can spread your inspiration across all the proficiencies, or dump them into a single one to become very specialized. For example, if you do NOT do a lot of mining, and don't really enjoy it, getting Elaborate Gemcutting will probably be a pain in the ass for you. But if you go that route and get your skills that high, you might as well specialize in being the guy who is always mining ore, cutting gems, and so on, because the time it will take someone else to get skills up to that level will be way behind.

In the long long run, just due to consumption/avoiding your inspiration regen cap, you will round out everything at a high level, if you choose to do so. I believe there are folks with 800 T&N for example who are trying to get as near to 100% slotting rate as possible. They would be considered "Tailors" in terms of a class system. Design your own class. At some level we are all Jack of All Trades, but depending on your time available and if you have a group, specializing has its benefits.

Nicely said.

This info is very helpful - I'm still so low in biles and profs that I have plenty of options to defer to as my skills arsenal grows - so I'm glad I asked early on. I think the advice is great and its really helped me understand a bit more about alts (aside from crime/scent alts) and how and why they are quite useful. I think I'll focus on my main a bit longer and then have her specialize in one ore two related areas. And then use alts to fill in the gaps. :P

Thanks so much for the advice, info and tips guys - you're the best! :)

Cheers

What do you mean by inspiration cap? Is this just simply that once it hits a certain number, it stops there? I have an alt that was recently at 1.6 million inspiration. Am I getting close?

The inspiration cap and regen rate is primarily controlled by the Black Bile stat. More BB means more regen and a higher cap.

If you hover your mouse on your inpiration rate (on the control+T tab, bottom), you'll see xxxx/yyyyy. The yyyyy is the cap.
