A Hermit's journey

}------------- DAY 1 -------------{

I am not exactly sure how this all started.

My life in Salem began pretty normal. I had my little leanto somewhere out in the wilds, I collected and crafted, and finally got to a point where I had enough silver to settle down with a proper homestead.
I began to venture out in order to find a good place to settle. I started exploring the vicinity of my Leanto. With every trip I found myself venturing further away, and sometimes feared I might get lost and never find back.

One day I was in Boston to do some trading. All of a sudden something strange happened.
As if I saw myself from outside of my body, a text magically appeared above my head, saying “WTB Backpack”.
A stranger approached me and offered a good deal; moments later I had spent most of my savings and was a proud owner of a shiny new backpack.
What happened afterwards was going by so fast, I can hardly remember. I traveled back to my leanto and stuffed, what I considered my most valuable property, into my new backpack.
I collected as much wood as I could find, put it into my good old campfire and lit it one last time.

Then I began walking.

Along the way I dropped most of my cloth, only leaving my pants on my body.
Initially I came across areas that I had ventured to before, but this time I was sure I’d never return back home. Suddenly I felt a freedom I had never experienced before.

I am now at the end of my first day of travelling. I came across many different areas, and saw a couple of very impressive, huge homesteads of obviously very hardworking settlers. When I find something interesting I study it along the way. I mostly eat what I find, berries or mushrooms, one time I even set up a little fire and prepared a delicious rabbit steak.
Whenever I feel like it I build a leanto and travel back to Boston for trading. But when I go back I just leave the leanto behind and keep on walking, setting up new leantos whenever there is the need.

I don’t know how long my journey will last, but there is one thing that I realized at the end of this first day as a hermit that struck me.
Without a home, I don’t fear to get lost.

}------------- DAY 2 -------------{

It’s a weird thing when the first thing you do after waking up is immediately starting to walk, but that’s exactly what I did. Mostly because a Bear tried to eat my face right after I woke up, but I also wanted to keep going east.

After a short while I hit what seemed to be a large lake. Since I’ve been wanting to explore a lake area for a long time I started to circle it right away. Eventually I got the feeling that what I tried to circle was actually the shore of the sea, and my path kept bending towards west, the direction I came from. I decided to head back and take a different route along the shore that allowed me to keep going east.

I came upon a new terrain which was much darker and had an enourmous amount of ledges and height differences. My initial instinct told me to find a way around the uneven terrain. However, after walking next to it for some time I noticed that the height differences seemed to be nothing I wouldn’t be able to climb with some effort, and in some way it almost resembled a giant, natural staircase. So I decided to head again straight east, right into the weirdest hill area I have ever encountered.

Initially I felt like a midget, continuously climbing up huge stairsteps, one after the other.
However, after a while the distance between the ledges increased and I was able to navigate the now maze-like structure without climbing all the time, which actually was a lot of fun.
Out of a sheer coincidence I had just learned a bit more about mushrooms, and oh my, there were a lot of mushrooms in that area.

Eventually I decided to give it a break and prepare some delicious shrooms on a stick. As a nice suprise, I actually found something worthwhile the first time ever in a log - some sort of yucky snake skin, which I thought I might be able to sell for some coins in Boston.

I almost felt a bit sad when the terrain, even though not changing in type, kept getting flatter and flatter until there was not much more climbing or navigation necessary anymore. However, I finally found a river, and as I walked along it I realized with joy that I was heading right into a giant system of multiple rivers that separated the lands like giant snakes (there were also a lot of very real small snakes, yuck).
It didn’t take me long until I realized where all those rivers seemed to come from - I hit the shore. I was shocked as I realized I would have to go back all the way since this seemed to be the end of my journey into the east.

However, since I saw some small patches of land going into the sea I decided I might as well see how far I could go, which turned out to be a good idea.
I actually found a passage of shallow water that seemed to be the connection to another large landmass. It’s hard to describe how happy I was to find out my journey was not over yet.

I cannot wait to find out what this new land holds for me.
This is the end of my second day.
