How do I get to the safe-town then???

Go to your leanto (or homesteaded claimstone once you get one of those), go into the actions menu and find the travel section. You can instant travel to town from your homestead/leanto, or to your leanto from town. I recommend putting the travel buttons on your hotbar.

When you were first guided into the world, the npc left you next to a leanto. That's your first homestead and if you get KOed, you will go back there. It looks like a leaning roof of sticks. http://www.thesalemwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Leanto

If you've wandered far from it, you probably just want to build a new one rather than try to track your way back to the old one. Remember to right click and 'set homestead' to make it your new home.

Also, while many people will abuse or grief anyone they see, a lot of people won't just kill you for no reason if you are clearly a rank newb depending on the circumstances. Sure, you can't retaliate, but you might also go crying to someone who can and get them to deal with the evidence, and they get a debuff for it, plus madness for some of the typical counting coup stuff like scalping.

It's just not worth it a lot of the time.

That doesn't mean they won't beat you up and/or mug you, though.
