That mechanic has since changed, and while each new one's damage gets diminishing returns, more is always better. So make clusters and try to block them off as they can get doused with water to be put out.

No, they need to get next to them, but once defenses are breached make sure putting out the first brazier doesn't make access to the base very easy. Read all topics on the matter and learn before you start building anything you won't be okay losing. Because in the end you will lose it all This is salem after all. But it's more fun if you lose it after you did your best xD
