Fishing help!

Hey guys, I'm kinda new and have been trying to fish. The very first time I got a pole and earthworm I got the mini-game thing to come up. But now, like the last 15 worms I have put on my pole and when I put it in the water the lure is in the water for like 5 seconds then it disappears. Is the success rate this low or am I doing something wrong.

To be honest fishing is just terrible at the moment. It's not even that much fun once you do figure it out. Your best bet will more than likely be to make fishing traps and check them a couple times a day.
