Multiple characters question

So I want to create another character just for fun, and I am wondering if its possible? if I press "New character" at launch screen will it create alternative secondary character? and it won't overwrite or something to my first character? Can I switch between and have both characters at same time to play whenever I want? (I don't mean playing 2 characters at same time)

If something happens to my second character (dies, etc) does it affect first in any way?

TL;DR: I want more details about multiple character creation/having multiple characters.

Each character is separate from the other. You don't have to worry about any of that.
