Are you playing with the sound on? The cougars will give a roar when they are near. Just spot them then go around.

As a fellow new player myself, I would just suggest that you pick up your things and move somewhere else.

Please keep your comments in Help to helpful, don't troll.

I'm sorry you've having a bad time with Cougars. If it makes you feel any better, my expedition character got KOed by a cougar like 10 seconds after I spawned. :/ They're pretty hard to spot in the world, but they do make coughing and growling sounds so it helps a lot to play with sound on.

Cougars are pretty rare so you might really be running into the same one several times. If you've been KOed a few times now and you've only put a couple hours into that character, it might be a good idea to make a new one. You can really have as many characters as you want and this way you can have fun on another character with maybe a luckier spawn point while you wait for the first to get its inspiration recharged.

Also take note that they don't move faster than your run speed, so if you don't just let it attack you then you can actually move away from it if you can reach deep water to cross, or a hovel door, or a fence gate or any other means of blocking it. If you are sprinting, it's leap at will not be able to hit you. Be aware of the growl sound and turn squirrels OFF in the custom radar.
