From another thread. Double posting it here as I think it belongs better here.

An admin in Europe, that can restart server after crash, when JC and the rest of US is sleeping :P

Loftar can and has restarted the server many times for y'all but it is simply because he is a kind and generous old-god, not out of some hard obligation he has to do so. Unfortunately, restarting the server is not an 'easy' task that we can hire just 'anybody' to do. If the people affiliated with Mortal Moments that are awake at the time lack the skillset to restart it then all that can happen is some loose diagnostics until I can dig deeper. As of now there are really only two people who can jump start the server, and to be perfectly honest the skillset required to do so under ALL bug-related issues is probably a $70,000-$100,000/yr salary, so I doubt you'll see a '3rd' person with that skillset added to the team who would be financially incentivized to do so. Every server crash requires a fairly firm understanding of a fairly significant code base because if the server crashes in a less than ideal way it would mean a full wipe instead of a simple restart if not addressed properly.

I wish we had a better solution, however, I pride myself in trying to make sure our downtime is less than the 8hrs a week you would get with "Maintenance" on any other MMO. The difference is our maintenance is unplanned and unscheduled :). I also don't think there has been any single week it has been down for more than 8 hours, twice. Perhaps later I'll run some statistics on the total uptime vs. downtime to put it in perspective but I do think on the whole we are doing ok in this department. When the server crashes it does send me a text message but I am not ALWAYS in a position to drop everything I am doing and get to a terminal to diagnose nor are we guaranteed that diagnosis won't take several hours in the first place.

Thanks for Understanding.

My skills are ready for this. Should we host a community poll on the value of server resets compared to downtime?

We are now putting in a LOT of the expedition content.

Fun Fact:
Expedition content represents a growth of nearly 5-10% of the ENTIRE Salem codebase.

It will probably be necessary to do this one more time before friday. We are also doing some hard-backups of Providence just incase.
