I must admit I'm not sure what the point you tried to make was in the end. That we need terminology to distinguish between a character being in the game world and him being actively played with a client? If that was your point, I might suggest using the terms that the code uses internally: "playing" vs "attached", respectively.

I know for sure who is embarrassing himself around here, and closing the thread would only be a solution to that to the extent that you consider remaining perpetually embarrassed as a solution.

Claeyt wrote:These "Pile on <whoever>" threads are really not fun to watch JC.

As much as I may hate myself for it, I do agree with Claeyt in principal, but in this case it's hard to see that Heffernan has not brought it onto himself.

@loftar: point is using concise language to mean specific things. Using the same word for multiple meanings leaves confusion, and why modern languages have tens of thousands of words. "Logged in" has always meant having an active connection, even if the user doesn't not think the connection is active, experience shows otherwise, and hacks can make it so without them easily knowing it. This isn't a hack or other attempt to fool the player, but an intentional mechanic to leave the character in the world even though nobody can do anything with it. That is far from being logged in because there is no connection left even with the character in the world. In MMO parlance, "persisting after leaving the game" fits better. Someone come up with a better term or phrase if they can.

I realize my satire, sarcasm, or however you want to classify it doesn't always translate well, but I don't think I made any ambiguities there.

@heffernan: Not trying to be offensive, just humorous (because Claeyt was somewhat implying that just letting a thread die wasn't enough to stop anyone posting in it or it would "go away" from the Internet forever). I do get what you're trying to say here, and I'm not in disagreement. For the purpose of the bet, though, I think you did fail to make a proper wager, and in the game of wagers, it's the one creating the wager that has the burden of making sure the wager is proper and both parties understand the rules, not the one accepting it. (The bigger issue is who has the greater authority, and has provided for some interesting fights, legal and otherwise, over the years.) You have the choice at this point of just accepting it, ignoring it, or continue railing. I'm sure there are other choices, but pretty much falls under those three.

You are "logged into" the forum even though there is no active connection. Session token is stored on your PC and on the server and that's it. There are no sockets maintaining connection. It's a stateless protocol.

So you are going to ignore all the valid points you don't like and endlessly repeat the ones you prefer?
And it's Dallane who embarasses himself?
Seriously, you are a fun guy, but how delusional can you be?
Just grow a pair already, and pay JC his well deserved 10k instead of ridiculing yourself even further.
