Well, the see through could be done like in the game series commandos 2 and 3 where you get a small pop up showing a 3D interior of a house that you can rotate.
We make sword stone for keeper and pull they do it and excalibur come out. have no make stone to for sword we make sword box for sword to put sword in for sword. -Moniker (Anarchy online)

If this got time put into it's implementation, it would be for the tears it would bring from items being banana tossed into walls and stoves and any other immovable objects and getting stuck I think :)

You could simplify it a lot. Have windows in houses. Lights go up when a player is inside the house. (The windows glow) That way you would know if a house is occupied or not. Also new game item: curtains. If curtains are closed, there is no way for outsider to tell if a house is occupied as no light glows.

There are a good number of ways to see if a base is active, and I'd be willing to bet most playtime is spen outside the house.
