Clarification of Insanity.

Postby NeiroShop » Fri Jun 05, 2015 11:38 am

Allright so alot about the insanity mechanic is still unsure...

Since we dont have a meter its probably gonna be annoying to find out(JC you lazy bum).

Whittling, How much & what does it include? Does it include planing boards?

Cooking on a fire? Does that include stoves? Does all recipes work or is it certain ones? Do some recipes give more insanity decrease?

If we had a meter theese would all be quite easy to find out ingame. So if anyone comes up with a decent method of measuring theese lemme know.

Those who dont understand the difference between insanity & Madness need not reply.

I don't know if a meter would be good here. It is not a bar to watch and manage, it is an unknown threat. I'd prefer to see it not as a bar. But maybe, with enough info, the custom clients will add a 'guestimate' using what is currently known if they don't get the raw data. So end result will be a bar anyway.....

Oh well.

Well atm if you are a lame bum you can put a timer. And have a pretty good clue on how much whittling you need to do thx to comments made by carver. However id much prefer a bar.

JC made it clear bar of that sort is not what they wanted and server doesn't send such info, didn't he?
In fact, I purposely designed the system so that the server does not even communicate your insanity levels to the client thus Ender and Kandarim cannot save you! Instead, I only update your clients to their 'madness level' when you do indeed gain one

He did. Im hoping he changes his mind. In the meantime if you got the spare time to test & draw some conclusions on the amount of insanity going down (in minutes i suppose) when you whittle and what recipes actually work for it.

Not sure if that is even possible to find out, even if there are no tricks, rng and complicated formulas, measuring that would take dozens of alts and days (maybe weeks) of work, but insanity system doesn't seem to be harsh enough to worth the effort. All I can tell at this point is that I haven't gained a single point of madness since the patch and I didn't do anything to prevent it on purpose, was just living a normal life, in last 5 days I was online for ~25 hours, I replanted ~250 pots, picked around 20-30 flowers, studied ~60-70 inspirationals (if every use counts as one), had ~60/40 she loves me/loves me not ratio, killed about 10 turkeys from my coops, planed ~100 boards, if that counts as whittling, my guess is it does, was afk and online for about 2h on the whole, found a dozen of gems while sifting, was sleeping in bed every night, however logged off in a less comfy places during the day. I did not try to spread any of these activities over time equally, was just doing it whenever I needed/wanted things done.
To compare, one of my citizens gained a point of madness on the same day patch hit after doing nothing but mining for a few hours, sifting didn't help much and he experienced two "Precious" episodes.
None of my alts reached any madness, but all they do is studying junk.

I know it's not quite something you were looking for, but I hope you'll get atleast something useful from it.
As for methods of measurement, what comes to mind is creating an alt and measuring the exact time it takes to reach 1st level of madness in afk mode (few alts to make sure it isn't random would be much better), then creating few more alts (as many as number of activities you want to check, can use same alts instead, but it would take longer), putting them to bed for a long enough time to get 0 insanity after learning all the needed skills, then doing one task and timing madness change in afk mode again. Difference would be your answer. Or not if there is rng element after all.

Actually IMO it can be done, to do just take clean alt and do one insanity upping thing till you reach madness 1, do that with all insanity adding tasks, and normalize it (I.e. pulling a tail 12 times gives 1 madness so one pulling gives 1/12 of a bar, and thats like 3 killed turkeys), then max insanity and start decreasing it after 10 uses of decrease of insanity start maxing it witch least adding task, and that way you probably can get more or less accurate meter. That said its lots of work and need to be coordinated with community. OFC if its random all that is useless

Clearification will be indeed helpful.

I know, when i do things that increases insanity, then i will reach after collecting enough insanity a madness level.
But...
...i have played "normal" the last days since the patch.
I have nothing done thats increase insanity, except being online without a doing (no... not afk for hours! Only between works and while i have updating the wikis).
I have do much work... chopping trees, paving, building sheds and so on and so on... i know, all that bring you not calm down.
But i have also do potting, whittling a little bit, cooking, learn things and i log out through laying into a bed since they are there.
But i have reached Madness 2 yet.

How quick will be raise the Insanity and also the Madness, when you do wandering through darkness or do other things that increase insanity, include standing still for a little chat or a wikiupdate or only to wait for next Bricks?

I'm agree with insanity patch - do not understand it wrong - but i think there should be not so much insanity when you work the whole day on your farm/claim/town.
And therfor it would be very helpful to know how much your insanity is, before you reach the next level of madness, so that you can something do against them in time.
