Study desk
- It would have 64 slots
- each type of inspirational would take one slot (after it's put in).
- if you put in an inspirational that's already in you will just sum their charges. Example: you have a singing log in with 8 charges, you insert another one with 10 charges so as a result you have 18 charges now. Up to 100 charges.
- you cannot take inspirationals out of the desk, only study them. Maybe also an option to free a slot by destroying an item.
- You cannot use inspirationals in the desk for crafting or socketing
- desk can be carried or destroyed (for crime purposes).
- you can equip the desk with some tools to get a small bonus when studying. For example each tool would give 1%-10% increase in amount of proficiency points gained when studying.
- The strength of the bonus would either depend on purity of the tools, or on the material the tool is made from.
- Examples of tools: magnifying glass, measuring ruler, scale weight, microscope (according to wikipedia some simple microscopes were commonly used in 1660s), jeweler's eyepiece, chemical reagents in testing tubes, tweezers, lamp
- Tools would wear out when you study stuff (the speed would be different for each item).
- Studying items at the study desk would decrease insanity more than studying from inventory.
- Desk itself wouldn't be too costly to make - some oiled boards, iron bars, nails. Tools would range from cheap ones to very costly ones (gold bars, steel, glass etc.)
The desk would allow us to store inspirationals in a more orderly fashion, as well as add another way of progressing for towns in the form of crafting study tools to make our inspirationals more effective
Compendiums
Compendiums would be a way for more experienced characters to boost the learning speed of less experienced characters. Characters with very high proficiencies could monetize on their lore, or simply help their friends, while new characters could buy themselves a boost, or get it by joining a town.
- Study desk would have a special slot where an empty book can be inserted
- When inserting the book one proficiency has to be chosen
- As long as the book (compendium) is in then every time an inspirational, giving the selected proficiency, is studied, the book will increase its "lore" level (the pilgrim writes down his findings on the specific subject)
- "lore" level would increase by the amount of proficiency points (for the selected proficiency) gained from studying, with harsh diminishing returns for repeatedly studying the same inspiration. For example, when writing a compendium of Stocks&Cultivars, studying first willow aphid would add 4250 lore (since it adds 4250 S&C) to the compendium. Second one would add only 2125, third one only 1062, fourth 531 and so on...
- Having a compendium inserted would increase inspiration cost of studying (since the pilgrim is taking extra effort to write down stuff). Optionally would also use a bit of ink
- Each compendium would have its maximum skill (don't confuse it with lore) level / cap which would be determined by the highest proficiency level of characters writing in the compendium
- When compendium is removed from the desk it's considered finished and cannot be put in the desk again. Now it can be copied.
- Copies cannot copied further.
- Copies of a compendium can be equipped in a tool slot and will help when studying inspirationals for the compendium's proficiency
- Compendium would either decrease inspiration cost for the specific proficiency (or maybe even nullify it), or would increase number of proficiency points gained. So with the compendium of S&C and studying willow aphid the pilgrim would would either had the cost of the 4250 S&C lowered (or even nullified) or would gain more than 4250. It's easier to better understand the nature and properties of inspirationals if you have a compendium guiding you, right?
- The reduced inspiration cost, or the proficiency points bonus would drain compendium's "lore". When "lore" reaches 0 compendium copy is destroyed
- Maybe it would also be possible to allow pilgrims to use copy of a specific compendium only once, that is, after it's destroyed, getting another copy would have no effect
- Compendium's max skill cap / level would limit would determine the max proficiency level to which the compendium would work. So if your pilgrim has higher level of S&C than the compendium then it would have no effect, nor studying would drain any "lore".
- Original copy of a compendium could be a precious loot - it would allow anyone to make more copies of this compendium
