You can go to the starting town with what you have in your backpack if you are within the range of your homestead [~8 tiles for a lean-to, anywhere from personal claim].

So basically, you can build a lean-to anywhere, claim it and port to the starting town to sell your goods.

Use enders client and remember the lay of the land. If are really lost just drop it all. everything is easily replaceable

Just like the pioneers did, learn the geography and navigate your way back.

I've been doing it that way for a good long time now. Other options are using the world map if available. Another choice is if you're on enders you can zoom the minimap out as far as it'll go and if you're within roughly 10 minimaps of home it'll show your path still :)
It's been neat to see the evolution of a game. Salem has come so far, and still has far to go. Although frustrating, I think it's been an experience worth the effort.

Enders (and the BD client, IIRC) will save your maps to a directory. There is a map program which will display them for you. The map shows you where you were when you started your current client session and if that is your homestead, life is easy; if you logged out in the middle of your wander, you will need to work your way back through several maps to figure out where you want to go.

It is worth while spending the time to understand your local geography so that most of the time you pretty much know where you are relative to your homestead.
