Confused on how to do this, I click on the player after bringing up the cursor, but nothing seems to happen. Any ideas?

Adding a person to a town can be done 2 ways. Either click on the player himself, or click his portrait when he is party with you. Once you click on the player or his portrait, he should get a pop-up asking if he accepts the invitation. It will take 125s when you add someone to the town so make sure your bell has silver.

Edit: If you are having trouble with the cursor try a different client and see if it works there
