Help noob with fishing.

I have the fishing skill and have a pole with bait but can't actually fish.

I go to a body of water and click on fishing from the action menu. Click on the water and all it does is say that I need to learn swimming in order to cross deep water.

That's because you are clicking into the deep water.
Right click the shallow more light blue water.

I have clicked right in front of the shoreline, where I am able to wade into the water and get the same thing. I will keep trying. Maybe I just can't use that body of water to fish.

Have you clicked on your bait and then right clicked on your fishing pole? Also make sure you fishing pole is in your right hand.

That's because you are clicking into the deep water.
Right click the shallow more light blue water.

You can fish in deep water. You can only go like 2 squares out from your character so you need to fish on the edge of the shore.
