Best of luck to you and your family JC. At least now you have a reason to be up all night coding.
Do not argue with idiots, for they will pull you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Well, to be fair, I'm not sure it was ever a point that one should use only assembly. There is, however, a very relevant point to be made that knowing assembly is just as valuable as ever, even in the case where one doesn't even write anything with it. Just knowing it for debugging, for inspecting compiled code, or for knowing what tools the compiler has at its disposal is invaluable. I also think there's a case to be made for learning assembly quite early on, since it's a very simple language in itself.

I would also argue that, to the extent that one writes hand-coded assembly, it's less because it's efficient (with today's complex CPUs, it's extremely hard to write assembly code that is more efficient than what a compiler can produce anyway), and more about being able to do things that simply cannot be expressed in higher-level languages, such as the code I posted, or, say, the ucontext functions from libc.

Agreed. How ever, on the context of the joke, potjer is saying "assembly or get out" which could be interpreted as praising it over other languages. I merely state the obvious that while having its own uniqueness, it is not very practical alone as of late (like you said nowadays CPUs are far too powerful). I know everyone knows the pros and cons already lol.
