I looked again at where I read about server restarts and it looks like I misinterpreted something. Just ignore it.

Just gonna point out that no matter how poor you look, if your only defense is a claimstone, a crime alt is still gonna tresspass on that claim and steal your stuff.
I'd reccomend getting a claim and 3-4 torchposts, and to look as poor as possible to repel crime alts, however if someone has a 60+ biled crime alt they can tear those torchposts down like they are matches hammered in the ground.

So the ideal defense is, look poor and ******, no digging, no paving, no leanto, use your claim as your home (harder to spot on the minimap for those not eagle eyed), braziers and/or torchposts, wood/stone wall (depends on how many braziers you have, if you have few i'd reccomend a stone wall) and out of render distance from someone canoeing in a river or lake nearby and generally as far away as possible from any place that a crime alt can get to easily.

So i'd suggest going to the twilight area (darkness if you are a witch), making a base like this:

And walling of your braziers in the middle of tiny 3x3 wall squares so it's even harder to break them.
Then after a while get a town bell, start making that brick wall and then you're relatively safe!

That's actually really useful! I'm not sure about getting close to the darkness yet seeing as I'm only around 15 in humors, much less a witch.
So you're saying I should stay away from rivers then? What about fish traps? And by no digging you mean no mining?

Rivers are sometimes used for quick travelling with a canoe, so the more people passing by means the likelier one raids you. Try traps on lakes or on a separate claim near the ocean.

Digging up dirt, flattening to build a base leaves a distinct dug up dirt pattern on the map, was to spot by people passing by even two map tiles away in the right conditions. However, being invisible on the map means they have to walk within rendering range of your base to actually see it.

After a long search I think I have found it at last. An iron vein out of render range from rivers, in a forest next to a grassland, with a 2 min distance from a lake not connected to a river, a swamp next to the lake and 5 min distance from a lime patch.
My only concern is an abandoned base with a mine and pavement around it about 3 minutes away. It has no claimstone and the leanto is free.
I suppose something like a farmer's house would also leave a mark on the map right?

To be fair I think anyone that wants to can just make new minimal markers to see all signs of civilization. Dirt is the only thing that changes actual map terrain, anything else has to be in render range (not sure about walls?) but the basic stuff that shows are leantos, walls, mines, wells, pavement. Think that's mostly it barring additional custom map markers.

Try to not list the location's description on here, people with good maps can easily pinpoint it if it's not too common.

Presuming he was just asking how to start out. After he builds some fences and amasses the resources for at least stone hedge and torchposts he should be a poor target and can expand from there, right? Been a while since I started a fresh base

Trying to build my mine entrance, cut and put the 30 planks, didn't build them, then I go trying to make a kiln. Several hours later when I go to place the bricks 14 planks are missing. Is it some decay system or did I just get robbed?
