Thanks for the tips, they've been really enlightening.
One last question: is it better to build my just another ugly base near a row of other ugly bases or try to get as far away from everyone as possible?

Didn't know that about Darwoth, but seeing that he just killed my previous character I can't say I feel sorry for him.

Hmmm, being far away from people does mean beter loot when you go foraging...
But mainly far away from Providence and any portable Landmarks will do.
You thought I quit.

Get yourself away from other claims, especially some large town. Some people are extremely territorial and will absolutely raid anything some noob has built near them even if it looks totally not worth it at all.

You probably don't want to live near other claims at all. Even if they're some peaceful types or fellow noobs which can't/won't raid you, the more targets there are near each other the better it looks to a raider. Something that I might not have bothered breaking into if it was all alone and i was not already on a crime debuff, i will surely raid if its close to something else i'm raiding. Its best to live a good distance from anyone else.

-Look poor is good advice
-Live far from others as you can
-Live far from providence / other landmarks
-Build defenses up as best you can as early as you can. It should be a very high priority.

Bear in mind this very person spent time defending a cluster of neighboring player claims, and even aided in building them a townbell, not on their dime. One could even say such a setup afforded a larger amount of security and safety than living far away and alone (where nobody can hear you scream) when a person who seems to give sound advice^, shows up and starts bashing your door.

Having friendly neighbored around is good, living close to strangers is very frequently bad. Even if they are normally peaceful if you don't have regular contact with them and make sure you are obeying their rules you may find yourself in trouble.

I have to disagree; so many claims i've raided were hit only because they were near other claims and i'd not have bothered with them if they'd been far from others. Seems to me the increased risk must outweigh whatever benefits they get from friendly neighbours quite a bit.

I see the pros and cons of living in a neighborhood, but I guess I'll try my luck alone for now.

Another thing that seems to baffle me: I've been walking around for many hours covering large stretches of land without seeing any claimed property, but only about 1 in 50 stumps/logs have anything at all in them, whereas in the starter zone near Providence items were somewhat in abundance. Are there different spawn mechanics depending on locations or is there some army of players that sweeps everything after every server restart? More to the point if stumps are empty does that mean players frequent that area?

Items spawn whenever the stumps are loaded in. So in a place like providence where people come and go frequently, the items spawn more often. The more abandoned a place is, the less chances the stumps get to spawn items.

So it's the opposite, it's a good thing if I find an empty place after the server restart. In my opinion though stumps only getting updated when they're loaded is just poorly written code, there are enough ways to place spawned items without actually loading the containers all the time.

Im not sure why you keep refering to a server restart - there is no restart due for the server at any point now, even with a huge crash the server would simply roll back to an older save.
Do not argue with idiots, for they will pull you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
