I'm asking for real. :|

I'm sure you've heard of the phonograph or audio tapes, no? Likewise, photographic film is a very non-digital way to store videos.

Alot of people confuse electric with digital. Digital means it's stored as a series of 1s and 0s or ons and offs or holes and not holes or something similar. Vinyl records and magnetic tapes are analog, which means you can have a complex range of values the the information is stored in.

Like a vinyl record is just a bunch of peaks and valleys in a groove and a needle run through the groove vibrates when it runs into them. You can actually hear the sound coming off the needle if you turn off your speakers.

It doesn't need to be binary just discrete.

Ey, it's not our fault. It's the guy who make the thread's name. We were talking about whether paper or digital "devices" is better. Then someone make this thread dropping the "devices" part ¦]

I didn't think "gramophone" was the vernacular in English; I'd only heard "record player". British vs. American thing?

More like technical and normal names.

Gramophone, phonograph, and graphophone are all old American names for similar products made by different manufacturers.

@loftar: you're right. It was Hollerith that invented the punch card for the 1890 US census based on the design of the Jaquard loom, invented in the early 19th century, where punched metal sheets were strung together to replace complex gearing and cams for making rugs. (Got to remember to double check myself better. Too much trivia, too little storage space, and getting old enough wiring is getting worn out.)

And since "digital" literally means "with digits," I don't think the alphabet is a good digital representation, unless, of course, you're trying to encode something.

@trudgle: you should look into mechanical diaphragm gramophones. Fun weekend project to make once you have kids old enough to experiment, and if you're still young (or old and into antiques), a fun project to build yourself. Should be some guides around on how to build one out of common objects. (I found at least a dozen on Google, some that only take 5 minutes to put together.)
