You are forgetting the most important part. His majesty won't be giving up such grand power

Finally you have arguments. I do share your concern about who is elected. I guess I still hope that people are not stupid and will elect someone that represent their interest and not his own. That might be very innocent indeed. As for Savage Charms I only gave it as an example you need to see the bigger picture here. I must admit it was the first example that pop into my mind as a server wide bonus as it is a bonus that all the players could benefit from. But we can imagine other bonuses such a server wide bonus to the influence of the fields as the Board has successfully imported from England new techniques or whatever.

Bonuses should be given through hard work and dedication not on the whim of someone elected nor server wide.

And that's why the bonuses would only be given after a server wide challenge. Let's take my previous example of the improved humus. The King would only allow the importation if the colonies prove their worth by sending a certain amount of crops back to England. The Governor could then choose to raise taxes so that he'd be able to buy crops from the Pilgrims and stock them. The amount would be something ridiculous like 50000 Ears of Wheat to be collected in two weeks. And if it succeeds then there would be a temporary server wide bonus of the fields' influence. If it doesn't then a drought comes in or something like that.

This starts to sound interesting, I like the idea of server-wide efforts. However you don't need governors for that.

The governor would be elected so as to fuel and direct the effort. It could potentially be elected on the forums but I think that an election in game would give a certain legitimacy.

Basically you want someone to spam the effort which anyone could do. No need for a elected offical for this when anyone can and should do it on their own.

I think you're just excited about your idea and really really want people to like it, but its just not suited to salem.
If you want to play a game with some artificial political system like this, go find another game.

One of the cool things about salem is the meaningful politics which arise on their own, by the words and doings of players, without outside forcing such as some vote and these 'bonuses' or whatever. I wouldn't like to get any closer to that sort of thing than the top ten towns system we already have. Some sort of elected official thing would only take away from the awesomeness we have, rather than add to it.

I'm not "excited" about my idea, I'm merely defending it. But let's admit that the devs are quite often poking and inciting players to generate more tears. My idea would just allow that while incorporating it to the game and its lore.

Encouraging drama is an ocean away from your artificial political system where we vote on some governor and whatever.
