Chances are the stumps you are searching have never been look'd inside before, so they have never started to spawn items.

This was like a large stump farm near my base, never been looked inside, so nothing was in any of the 200-300 stumps, after my first search i went back several hours later and found 3 eggs.

Retrace youre footsteps, you should find an egg ^.^
